Three Books Every Creative + Business Owner Should Read

Welcome to a new series on the blog called Friday Favorites. Each Friday I’m going to be sharing with you guys some of my favorite books, podcasts, recipes, and other things in life that I’ve learned to love and just don’t want to keep secret any longer and want to share with the world.

To start it off, I’m going to be sharing my three favorite books every creative and small business owner should read.

I’ve listed them as books for small business owners, but honestly, they’re books for anyone at any stage in life, and these three books have been the most essential in shaping the way I’m living today.

1. Essentialism by Greg McKeown, The Disciplined Pursuit of Less.

In it, Greg helps you determine that essentialism isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s about getting only the right things done. He asks you to ask yourself these questions, have you ever found yourself stretched too thin? Do you simultaneously feel overwhelmed and under utilized? Are you often busy, but not productive?

These are the huge obstacles that I face as a small business owner and really trying to figure out how to clarify my message and spend my time most efficiently. I highly recommend this as it’s a great way to set your overall mindset when developing your business strategy.

2. An amazing read every small business owner is Atomic Habits by James Clear.

Atomic Habits is a book that allows you to take the overall mindset discussed in Essentialism and use daily tactical strategies to put those habits into place. My takeaway from this book is that small things done over time really do add up. The one thing I’ve done differently since reading this book is showing up every day and making tiny changes in my life through my atomic habits to move the needle forward. I highly, highly, highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make lasting change over time.

3. The Next Right Thing by Emily P. Freeman.

This is a special book, because it’s a simple soulful practice for making life decisions. I often find that I’m overwhelmed and lack clarity and direction. Emily uses the faith-based practices that she goes in her book to help you create room for your soul to breathe, name the things that are unnamed inside and then do the next right thing in love. I really have read and reread this book twice because her advice is so timely and just so warm.

I’ve learned that I have to really need to find lots of time for my soul to breathe, and that writing has become a soulful practice for me because it allows me to name unnamed things. I have to write to know what I think. Finally the atomic habits are all about showing up and making small changes over time. It’s my next right thing and all I can do. I hope these books are useful to you and I would love to know if you read them and let me know your thoughts.
