The proper mindset is the key to a successful family photography session!

This week is our last blog post in our series on preparing for your family photo session, and I would like to leave you with some thoughts on mindset.  Basically, no matter how much you prepare yourself or the kids in advance it all comes down to having the right mindset before + during the session. That is key!

I cannot stress enough that memories are tied to your photos.  If you look back at an image and remember how much fun you were having that feeling will carry over.  If you look back and remember everyone stressed out, moody and grumpy then you will experience those emotions as well.  That is why it is important to create a positive environment before and during the session.  Here are a few tips that will help you rock your session.

Before the session:

Turn your family session into a fun experience.  Plan a family outing after the session that includes dinner, ice cream, or whatever your family loves.  Talk about how fun the session + the outing will be and get the kids excited about the entire evening.  As an added bonus it gives a fun conversation topic to use with the kids during the session.  I just ask them about their upcoming ice cream date and the smiles start coming naturally.

Get the kids involved! If you have older kids or girls that love to shop, get them involved in picking out their clothes.  Have a fun shopping day or got get your hair done together.  Set the tone for a fun, family experience that will make lasting memories.

During the Session:

Kick back, relax and enjoy this distraction-free time with your kids.  No cell phones, no devices, just you and your family spending time together.  What a precious gift!  Many of my families are smiling when they arrive at the session because they know how much fun they are going to have.

My photo sessions are play-based and capture candid images.  Don’t worry!  We get the formal portraits done at the beginning of the session and then just enjoy each other’s company.  Your family will come to life and create joyful connections which I encourage through fun prompts and games.  I have games, questions and fun ideas for babies through grown children. You are never too old to have fun together!

Hopefully, these tips will add the icing to the cake in all of your pre-session preparation!
